Man Accused Of Carjacking And Beating Woman

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind – A Merom man was arrested Thursday afternoon after Sheriff’s investigators say he carjacked a woman in Sullivan County, and then later beat her in Illinois.

Police say that 32-year-old William “Billy” Ray Grimes was arrested in Clark County, IL by the United States Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force.

Officers say that back on September 13th Grimes asked a female acquaintance for a ride to Illinois, but she said no.

Grimes then allegedly forced her into the passenger seat, taking her and her SUV to Clark County, Illinois.

Once in Illinois, Grimes reportedly attacked the woman causing serious injuries to her face and hand.

He then allegedly took her SUV and left her behind.

She underwent surgery at Terre Haute Regional Hospital for broken bones to her face and hand.

Police use OnStar in the vehicle to find the in a rural area near Riverton, Ind.

OnStar disable the vehicle, but Grimes abandoned the vehicle and fled.

He is now being held in the Sullivan County Jail on felony charges if Criminal Confinement and Auto Theft.

His bond is $48,000. with no 10% allowed.

Illinois authorities are handling the battery portion of the investigation, and charges are pending.

Sheriff Cottom said the case will also be forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for review, as the carjacking involved transportation across state lines.
