TERRE HAUTE, Ind – Terre Haute City Council approves abatement for old downtown YMCA project Thursday night.

The council approved a requested nine-year tax abatement for $100,000 from Wisconsin-based Commonwealth Company.

The company wants to renovate the old YMCA building on South Sixth Street into apartments and construct six townhouses on the site.

The YMCA building would house 34 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.  The six townhouses would each be three bedrooms.

Attorneys for Commonwealth say the project would be worth $10 million.

The abatement still needs a second vote of approval at the June meeting before it is granted.

The next meeting on June 4 will be at 6:00 p.m.

It is not clear yet if that meeting will be in person or online.
