EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A new rule handed down from the Indiana Supreme Court is now in affect. Criminal Rule 26 requires an assessment be done by probation officers on newly arrested and booked jail inmates that determines if they should be allowed to be released from jail on bond.

It’s designed to try and cut down on the number of issues counties face in regards to jail overcrowding. However, Judge Les Shively tells WFIE there are still issues with how they plan to pay for and conduct these assessments, since he has a hard time believing probation officers will volunteer their time to conduct them.
