EDGAR COUNTY, Ill. – The Edgar County, Illinois Jail will be officially be closing its doors on December 1st and now arraignments need to be made to house prisoners.

The jail is being closed because there is not enough money to make the necessary repairs to the 127-year-old facility.

The county is working with area sheriff’s departments to find facilities to house their prisoners.

County board members said they’re estimating housing inmates at $383,000 a year. That breaks down to an average of 30 inmates per day at $35 per inmate.

Officials hope to be able to have their own jail at some point in the future.
