Tanoos To Make Initial Court Appearance Today

VIGO COUNTY, Ind – Former Vigo County School Superintendent Dan Tanoos will make an initial court appearance in Indianapolis today.

Tanoos is facing felony charges of bribery for allegedly soliciting and accepting gifts such as concert tickets, and dinners from Energy Systems Group and its representative Doug Tischbein.

Many of those items were given and received between 2013 and 2014 in Marion County which is why the charges were filed there.

The company was awarded millions of dollars in contracts to perform energy saving projects at multiple school buildings in the Vigo County system.

Even though no one else has been criminally charged, the Vigo County School Corporation will now conduct its own investigation.

Specifically officials and hired investigators will be looking at relationships between corporation employees and vendors.

The corporation has already been reviewing some polices and practices after two employees admitted to engaging in a kickback scheme that stole tens of thousands of dollars from the corporation.

On another note, Tanoos was a special deputy for the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department. His position with the department was contingent on his role with the school corporation. On Tuesday Vigo County Sheriff Gregg Ewing suspended Tanoos from the department pending the outcome of his legal troubles. Tanoos has turned his badge and gun.
