GIBSON COUNTY, Ind. — More than 100 coal miners in southwestern Indiana will lose their jobs this fall.

About 120 workers will be laid off when the Somerville Central Mine in Oakland City closes in early October.

Somerville owner Peabody Indiana Services, LLC said it is closing the facility due to “uneconomical business conditions,” reports the Princeton Daily Clarion.

The Somerville mine is one of several mines Peabody owns in Gibson County.

Peabody said it plans to offer “comparable positions” at other company-owned mines to current mine employees whose jobs are being eliminated.

Somerville Central Mine is the second coal mine in the region to close this year. White Stallion Energy closed its Liberty Mine in neighboring Warrick County in April.
