Children’s Museum announces special holiday hours and activities

With schools on break and families traveling for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the Terre Haute Children’s Museum is bringing some extra holiday cheer with special hours and activities.  And many families will host out-of-town guests and the Museum is a place where all generations can have a shared experience to create memories.  It’s easy to find common ground when adults engage in and support their children’s play at the Museum which results in quality family time. A parent in the 2018 survey of Museum Goers stated, “Museum visits are some of our best family memories!”

The Museum’s Education Team will host programming events throughout the week.

  • Elf Games: Train to be a 1st Class Elf – Become an official elf, by going throughspecial training and earning your very own elf badge! Children will get a “report card” to be marked by the head elf at each station to show they have completed the full training. Once completed, children will visit Elf Headquarters to make their own badge and will sign the “Official Elves of 2018” board that will be on display!  Elf Games is Dec. 22, 26, 27, 28 & 29 from 11 am to 3 pm each day and is included with admission.
  • New Year’s Noon – The BIGGEST party of the year might just be the last!  The Museum opens at 10 am to make crowns and noisemakers, then we’ll ring in the New Year at the stroke of noon with a ball drop and dance party! Kids don’t have to stay up ’til midnight to celebrate! Welcome the New Year, kid-style! The New Year’s Noon celebration is Dec. 31 starting at 10 am; the ball drop takes place at noon, though the Museum is open for play until 2 pm and is included with admission.
  • Hands-On Science: Let It Snow! –  The beginning of the year always brings a snowy cheer! Join us for hands-on activities involving throwing snowballs, constructing snowflakes, and “snow” much more!  This will take place Jan. 2, 3, 4 & 5 from 11 am to 3 pm and is included with admission.
  • First Friday: Hot Coco Concoctions –  Hot chocolate weather is the best weather! Get cozy and experiment with different hot chocolate recipes. Discover how cooking is science as you create the perfect chocolate concoctions to enjoy on a cold winter evening of Jan. 5 from 5 pm to 8pm and is included with a special First Friday admission of $5.

While you’re at the Museum, be sure to take advantage of our membership special. Now, through December 31, purchase a Terre Haute Children’s Museum membership, and you will receive $25 to spend in our Science Store. And as a nonprofit organization, all proceeds from science store and membership sales go directly to Museum provide educational, interactive exhibits and programs for all children; allowing them to learn through play and develop learning foundations in science, technology, engineering, math and health that contribute to their long term success in school and beyond. Get your holiday shopping done and support the Museum and the kids in our community all at the same time!

The Museum will resume its regular operating schedule on January 8.

The Terre Haute Children’s Museum, located at the corner of 8th Street and Wabash Avenue in downtown Terre Haute, is a nonprofit institution dedicated to enriching our children’s lives through the exploration of science and technology. The Museum receives no city, state or federal funding, relying solely on visitor fees, gifts, donations, and grants to fund its world-class educational exhibits and programs.

Museum admission is free for members of the Terre Haute Children’s Museum and children under 24 months. Regular admission is $8 for adults and children over 24 months. Families who participate in qualifying assistance programs can enroll in the Access Pass program, which allows them to visit the Museum for just $2 per family member per visit.
