Vigo Teen Could Face Decades In Prison If Convicted

TERRE HAUTE, Ind  – A Terre Haute teen was in court Wednesday to be officially charged with reckless homicide in connection to the death of another teen.

19 year old Nathan Derickson was allegedly playing with a gun last week when police say that he pointed the weapon at 17 year old Garrett Sands and pulled the trigger killing him.

Police say that Derickson’s parents were out of town on vacation when he had a party at the family home in Idle Creek.

Several teens were believed to be consuming alcohol and Derickson believed that the gun was not loaded.

If convicted Derickson could be sentenced to 6 years in prison on the wreckless homicide charge and as many as 20 years if some sentencing enhancements are added in.

A pre-trial hearing is set for September 17.

His trial is set to start October 9th.

Derickson remains free on bond and is being held on home detention and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
