Indianapolis, In. – A federal judge in Indianapolis will soon decide whether the man accused of killing Detective Greg Ferency is competent to stand trial. Shane Meehan faces federal murder charges for the 2021 ambush shooting of the Terre Haute detective. Judge James Patrick Hanlon scheduled a critical competency hearing for May 22. A newly unsealed medical evaluation suggests Meehan may now be fit to face a jury, reversing a previous 2024 ruling. If found competent, Meehan’s trial will begin August 17, with a maximum penalty of life in prison.
