Indianapolis, In. -A federal judge has blocked the government’s last-minute attempt to seek the death penalty for Shane Meehan, the man accused of killing Terre Haute Detective and FBI Task Force Officer Greg Ferency. In a ruling issued this week, the court held that federal prosecutors could not “unring the bell” after previously informing the defense they would not pursue capital punishment. The decision follows a multi-year legal battle where the government attempted to reverse its stance following a change in administration. Meehan still faces federal charges for the 2021 ambush, with a trial date tentatively set for August. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
