Terre Haute, In. – The City of Terre Haute, the Terre Haute Fire Department, and Vigo County Central Dispatch have launched the “Crosswalk to Care” program to better manage 911 medical calls. Under this initiative, dispatchers use a specialized triage system to identify “low-acuity” or non-emergency situations—such as mild pain, minor injuries, or flu symptoms—and route them to a registered nurse navigator. These licensed nurses evaluate symptoms and guide callers toward appropriate care options, including urgent care centers, primary care physicians, or telehealth visits, which helps residents avoid the high costs and long wait times of an emergency room. While the program aims to keep ambulances available for critical, life-threatening emergencies, officials emphasize that emergency crews will still be dispatched immediately for any serious medical needs.
