Indianapolis, In. – Federal prosecutors are fighting to put the death penalty back on the table for the man accused of killing a Terre Haute police detective. U.S. attorneys filed an appeal on March 19th, seeking to overturn a judge’s decision that blocked them from pursuing capital punishment against Shane Meehan. Meehan is charged in the 2021 ambush and shooting of Detective Greg Ferency. While a federal judge recently ruled the government could not “unring the bell” after initially declining to seek the death penalty, prosecutors are now asking a higher court to intervene. Meehan’s trial is currently set for August 17, 2026.
