Terre Haute, In. – A death investigation is underway in after a woman died shortly after being booked into the Vigo County Jail on Tuesday morning. Sheriff officials say that 38-year-old Jakita Brown was found unresponsive in her cell around 10:00 a.m., roughly six hours after her admission. Brown had been arrested earlier that morning by Indiana State Police on several charges, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Reports from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office indicate that jail medical staff initially refused to admit her, requiring the arresting officer to take her to a hospital for medical clearance. After receiving a second clearance from a doctor, she was booked into the facility at 4:10 a.m. Emergency measures were taken by jail staff and EMTs, but Brown was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.
