Clay County, In. – Shortly before 6pm on Tuesday April 15th an off duty Knightville Town Marshall spotted a stolen U-Haul fueling up at State Roads 59 and 42 near I-70. Officer from the State Police and The Clay County Sheriff’s Department attempted to make a traffic stop but the driver of the U-Haul took off west bound on State Road 42. The U-Haul turned onto a private drive and stopped, and a female passenger bailed and ran.  Officers attempted to place stop sticks but the driver continued down the private lane before stopping again.  As officers tried to communicate with the driver he slammed it into reverse, nearly striking a Clay Co. Deputy and hit 3 Clay County Patrol vehicles.  He then turned around and stopped. Negotiations with the driver continued for nearly 90 minutes. During this time the Terre Haute Police Department Special Response Team was called in.  Suddenly the driver took off heading straight at a fully marked State Police vehicle with two troopers located next to it in defensive positions. The U-Haul collided with the State Police vehicle. The force of this collision threw one trooper in the air. At that point officers from Clay County and The Terre Haute Police Dept. opened fire striking the driver.  The driver was transported, by helicopter, to an Indianapolis hospital.  He has been identified as 47-year-old- Dale L. Evans of Terre Haute. The female passenger in the U-Haul was taken to the Clay County Jail for questioning and has been released. A State Police trooper was transported to a local hospital in Terre Haute with non-life-threatening injuries he received from the collision.  All Officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is customary in officer involved shootings.
