Greenfield, Ind. — A dispatcher in Hancock County is receiving both praise from her peers and gratitude from a couple who are now the parents of a healthy baby boy who came into the world a little sooner than planned.
Nathan and Kelsey Weiss realized that their soon-to-be-born baby boy, Zeke, was on the way on October 21st. Kelsey Weiss has already given birth to two other children and like when they were born, she decided to go through most of her labor at home and then go to the hospital.
However, little Zeke had other ideas and when the time came for them to go tot he hospital, Nathan realized that Zeke was going to be born not with in ours, but within minutes.
“I started to see him crown and that’s when I dialed 911,” he told WISH-TV. “Just made the call and said ‘Hey! Start sending EMT’s because my baby is on the way!’.”
Hancock County dispatcher Alyssa Eichholtz answered the call. She immediately began coaching Nathan on what do to as EMTs were not going to get there in time for Zeke to be born. Nathan had to do it himself.
As they were sent, Eichholtz kept Nathan on track and helped him deliver Zeke over the phone. Minutes later, EMTs arrived and took all to the hospital. Zeke was in good health despite his unique entry into the world.
A few weeks later, after everyone with the Weiss’ was settled out, they visited the Hancock County dispatch center with Zeke and thanked Eichholtz personally for her help through the ordeal.
“It was surreal. A very special moment for me,” Eichholtz said. “We don’t get a lot of that type of positivity and it definitely re-ignited the sense of why I do the job.”
