Vigo County, In. – State and local wildlife officials are on high alert today as highly pathogenic avian influenza—already blamed for the deaths of over 1,000 crows in Terre Haute—is now confirmed to be killing Canada geese. Vigo County conservation officials report finding approximately 55 to 60 dead Canada geese already this week. Brendan Kearns, Executive Director of the Vigo County Soil and Water Conservation District, notes that recent heavy snowfall may have weakened the birds, making them more vulnerable to the H5N1 strain. This surge in wild bird deaths follows a significant outbreak at a commercial turkey farm in nearby Sullivan County just days ago, where more than 45,000 birds were lost.
