New York, New York – Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza has won the Heisman trophy. The first time ever an Indiana University football player has won the coveted award. The previous best finish for an IU player was running back Anthony Thompson of Terre Haute, who was the runner-up in 1989. Mendoza led the Hoosiers to an undefeated 13-0 regular season, their first-ever No. 1 ranking, and the program’s first outright Big Ten championship since 1945.
