Terre Haute, In. – Beginning immediately Union Hospital will start screening for measles. The screening will happen for every patient at each visit to minimize the spread of the illness. This applies at Union Hospital Terre Haute, Union Hospital Clinton and any Union Medical Group facility. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or breathes. Health officials said vaccinating before exposure remains the best defense against measles infection and its complications as there isn’t an antiviral treatment. Measles can start with with a  dry cough, fever, runny nose and red watery eyes seven to 14 days after exposure. White spots may develop in the mouth two to three days after symptoms begin, and a full measles rash can develop three to five days after the onset of symptoms.
