INDIANAPOLIS — Central Indiana is experiencing its first heat wave of the year, with high temperatures and humidity expected to persist through the week.
A heat advisory remains in effect for all of Central Indiana through late Friday. Forecasts indicate heat index values will range from 100 to 105 degrees during the afternoon hours.
Tuesday’s high temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s in Indianapolis and surrounding areas, marking the fourth consecutive day of 90-degree or higher temperatures downtown. Winds from the southwest will be light, providing minimal relief from the heat and humidity, which will continue into the evening.
There is a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, primarily in northern Indiana. While most areas will remain dry, any storms that do develop may produce heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts, and hail.
Conditions from Wednesday through Friday are expected to remain consistent, with high temperatures in the low to mid-90s and the potential for scattered afternoon thunderstorms. The National Weather Service notes these storms may be fueled by ongoing heat and humidity.
By the weekend, the high-pressure system responsible for the current heat wave may begin to weaken. This could lead to additional chances for rain and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. However, daytime highs are still forecast to remain in the 90s.
