Terre Haute, In. – Just before 2pm Thursday a 1944 WWII Grumman TBM-3 Avenger from the Cincinnati Warbird Museum crashed while landing at Terre Haute Regional Airport. The plane was a part of a flight of three planes coming into the airport. The first plane landed without problems. The second plane was diverted to the Sullivan airport and the third plane was the Avenger that crashed and nosed over while landing. The pilot and co-pilot were the only people on the plane. By the time rescue personnel were on the scene the co-pilot was able to get out of the plane. He was not injured. The pilot was trapped and had to be extricated from the plane. He was then airlifted to an Indianapolis Hospital. The airport was closed for a short time. One runway was opened back up a short time later. The crash site was secured by the 181st Intelligence Wing and local law enforcement. It will remain secured until the FAA arrives to investigate.
