Terre Haute, In. – According to Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun over 19,000 tons of asbestos-contaminated materials have been removed from the site of the former Columbian Enameling site on beech street in the city.  The material has been hauled to the federally permitted Sycamore Ridge Landfill, which can safely accept asbestos-ridden materials. The EPA has been monitoring air quality conditions in and around the job site, including the Deming Early Learning Center, while the asbestos materials are being agitated and moved and there have been zero detectable upticks during the removal. The mayor says that The EPA is on track for full removal of contaminated materials by early summer. Next on the list is basement and soil sampling. If the soil comes back contaminated, the EPA will conduct soil scraping. Once the EPA has completed the work, the city can apply for brownfield status of the property which would allow for building of many different types of projects.
