Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania — Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning, forecasting six more weeks of winter, according to American lore.

On Feb. 2, 1887, the legend was born when a Gobbler’s Knob groundhog came out of his burrow, saw his shadow, got scared and ran back inside, according to local legend.

Wabash Valley residents may or may not be pleased that Phil saw his shadow today, depending on their love of cold weather. It may not mean much to many of us because other than a stretch of very cold temperatures, the Valley’s snow total to date is less than the annual average. The drought we experienced has been eradicated by rain, meteorologists say.
