Indianapolis, In. – New laws went into effect on July 1^st in Indiana. They include: A ban on camping, sleeping, or maintaining long-term shelters on unauthorized public land. Violators who refuse to move within forty-eight hours face a Class C misdemeanor, up to sixty days in jail, and a five hundred dollar fine. Simultaneously, a separate law authorizes the Indiana National Guard to establish its own specialized military police force. Once activated by the governor, these units will hold full law enforcement powers, including the authority to carry firearms, conduct searches, and make arrests statewide. Other significant laws rolling out beginning July first include a mandatory “bell-to-bell” personal cellphone and device ban for students in all public and charter schools, alongside strict requirements forcing local governments to comply fully with federal immigration detainer requests.
