Parke County, In. – An Indianapolis woman is alive today thanks to the heroic actions of quick-thinking bystanders. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reports that Bobbie Baker was canoeing on Sugar Creek when her boat hit a log, throwing her into the water without a life jacket. Baker was submerged for a minute and lost her pulse. Nearby bystander Cole Riggleman pulled her to shore, while Dr. James Malenkos and a group of citizens administered CPR for twelve minutes until her heart restarted. Because of the remote location, another citizen and an EMT had to row Baker two miles downstream in a canoe to meet a waiting ambulance. DNR officials credit the fast actions of these citizens with directly saving Baker’s life.
