RICHMOND, Ind. — A police officer in Richmond is in bad shape at a hospital in Ohio after being shot during a traffic stop Wednesday evening.

Indiana State Police have taken over the investigation of the traffic stop in which they say Ofc. Seara Burton was called to bring her K9 officer “Brev” to where police were tracking a man on a moped. Burton made the traffic stop and her “Brev” signaled the presence of drugs.

“The suspect drew a weapon and fired multiple shots at the officer,” said ISP Sgt. Scott Keegan. “Assisting officers at the scene returned fire and the suspect fled on foot. Officers from Richmond chased the suspect and apprehended him without incident.”

Philip Lee, 47, of Richmond is the man who fired the initial shots, hitting Ofc. Burton. Lee himself was wounded in by the returning fire from other officers before he ran off and was caught.

“One of my officers was seriously wounded,” added Richmond police chief Michael Britt. “She is a four-year veteran of the force. The thing we do know for certain is that my officer is in very critical condition fighting for her life.”

Burton was transported to a hospital in Dayton. Lee was also taken to a hospital in Richmond where his condition is not clear yet.

“Officer Burton has been a tremendous officer,” said Richmond Mayor Dave Snow (D). “We’re thankful officers were able to apprehend the assailant that committed this violence that will just not be tolerated in the city of Richmond.”

The Wayne County prosecutor is looking over the evidence now to see what Lee will be charged with.
