FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Could it be the end of an era?

On Thursday afternoon, The News-Sentinel furloughed its final employee, Kevin Leininger. He’s been a journalist for 42 years.

In a Facebook post, Leininger said:

“RIP, NEWS-SENTINEL? Just got this news a few moments ago: I’ve just been “furloughed,” which means the News-Sentinel will essentially cease to exist as of tomorrow, apparently along with its one page in the daily JG. Officially, this is temporary. But I doubt it.”

Leininger was the newspaper’s lone reporter and columnist, after it moved to all digital in 2017. It merged with The Journal Gazette, where The News-Sentinel would get one page.

Last week, the newspaper furloughed employees in its advertising, production and niche products divisions last week, and eliminated positions in its circulation department.

The News-Sentinel dates back to 1833.
